David was an exceptionally warm engaging, teacher. I saw that immediately upon meeting him at Back to School Night, and understood in moments how he elicited such enthusiasm and connection with his students. Our son Ryan was in his UConn history course this year. Mr. Pape was his favorite teacher, and Ryan is deeply saddened by his passing. It is so difficult to lose your son or father, particularly at the young age of 43. My own father was killed in a car accident at 45. I hope it is a comfort to know what a wonderful, special person he was not only to his closest family and friends but to the hundreds of students whose lives he touched as a remarkable educator. We extend our sincere sympathy to his family. We are so sorry for your loss. Michael & Michele Robert

To the Pape family: I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. From my senior class advisor to esteemed colleague, Pape (because he wouldn't let me call him Mr. Pape anymore) was a remarkable man. He taught for all the right reasons and anyone who had him can attest to that. He always had a smile on and a joke to tell. He will truly be missed, but his legacy will live on with all those who have had the pleasure of knowing him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.

Mr. Pape,
Thank you for looking out for me. Thank you for telling me to smile. Thank you for playing air guitar in the hallway to cheer me up. You were a remarkable human being with the ability to connect with each and every one of your students. Your kindness impacted me greatly. I'm seeing KoRn this summer. That band will always remind me of you. Rest in peace and rock on, Mr. Pape.

Dave Pape was the perfect teacher. His talent resided in his ability to engage students intelligently and creatively while always being able to keep the classroom a very human place where humor and the unique character of the teacher brought a deeper learning and relationship that cannot be learned in college or workshops. Dave had it. Every one of his students felt it. And each was blessed by his presence.

For me, Dave was a friend, a kid I first met as a colleague eating lunch in the backroom of the Social Studies Office. He was someone I watched as he matured, who shared his trials and tribulations with me, and one who was willing to listen to mine.

I will miss Dave very much.

I was shocked when I found out you died, Mr. Pape. I was planning on visiting you during my summer break to catch up on school and all of our memories from class, especially one personal discussion we had that I will never forget and will keep in my heart. You got your shoutout on CNN Student News, and yes, the pun at the end was still terrible as it always was. Showing us those videos opened me up to the world around me a little more. You made me, and everyone else in class feel like a part of your family. I remember the couple articles I wrote for The Eaglet because you inspired me. I wish I had gone bowling with you because I heard that you're incredible, but now you get to bowl forever with everyone else in heaven. You were an amazing, funny guy that will live on as a Wolcott High School legend. I wish the best of luck to your family. Rest in peace, Mr. Pape.

Mr. Pape was one of the best teachers that I have ever had. Throughout my sophomore year at Wolcott High School, he was my civics and U.S. history teacher. He made class very enjoyable and included everyone in the learning experience. He wasn't a teacher to just teach, but to also build friendships with his students. No matter the student, he treated them all equally. He made the learning experience for I and many others fun and enjoyable. I would like to send my condolences to his family. He will gorever be missed. Rest in peace Mr. Pape.

So many memories with this man over the years. I have been friends with him since the first day of freshman year and 18 years later, I'm still proud to call him my friend. Finally after all these years, I had the chance to bowl with him, and looked forward to every Monday night because of him. I am very thankful he had the opportunity to come on our trip to Vermont and had fun the entire weekend. Jim, Lee, and the kids, sending prayers to all of you. David was a great man, a great father, and the best friend that anyone could ever ask for. Not a day goes by that I don't miss him. Til we meet again Dave, enjoy paradise. Love you brother!
