Rebecca Rose Maheu

Waterbury – Rebecca R. Maheu (Cassel), 74, of Waterbury, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 26, 2021. Rebecca was predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Gary R. Maheu, Sr. and her twin sister Ann Cassel.

Rebecca was born on September 13, 1947 in Waterbury, daughter of the late Alexander and Eva (Berger) Cassel. Rebecca was full of sass and had a gift to apply humor to any and all situations, predominately in the uncomfortable ones, that is what made her humor so special. Being able to give others the opportunity to enjoy the gift of laughter is what fulfilled her soul. She loved to read novels, write poetry, aspired to be a comedian in her later years and enjoyed sharing her deep knowledge of astrology with others throughout her life.

She was animated, full of spirit and if you were in her presence you most likely would not have forgotten the conversation or the enjoyment of her infectious laugh. Rebecca loved playing the game of bingo at various venues in Waterbury and enjoyed the friendships she built over the years.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and aides at St. Mary’s Hospital and Autumn Lake Healthcare for their genuine compassion and dedication to Rebecca’s care. Their support will never be forgotten.

Rebecca is survived by her sister Gertrude Wiltbank (John) and brother Harold Cassel (Joyce), her son Steven Maheu and his wife Jennifer, son Gary Maheu Jr. and his wife Kathy and daughter Virginia Maheu-Burke; seven grandchildren, Justina Burke, Angela Boutote, Matthew Burke, Bryan Burke, Zachary Maheu, Keri Maheu, and Alex Maheu; and two great-grandchildren, Ronnie Kezelevich and AJ Geraldi.

A graveside service will be held on December 30, 2021 at 11:30 a.m., at New Pine Grove Cemetery, 850 Meriden Road, Waterbury. There are no calling hours.
