Gladys was born July 26, 1927 in Suscon, PA, daughter of the late Irene (Fabian) Young and the late John (Jack) Young.
Raised in Pennsylvania and Connecticut she attended local schools and after skipping a grade in high school, she proudly graduated from Post University in Waterbury.
Gladys is survived by her three daughters, Sharon Gardner and her husband Kevin of Wolcott, Dianne Colapinto of Naugatuck and Donna Markie and her husband Dave of South Windsor, and by her son, Joseph J. Colapinto and Sue Fuchs of Wolcott.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren Kristen Colapinto, Stacy Gardner, Jason Gardner, Koralin Dains, Brianna Shea, Jakob Colapinto, Sam Colapinto and Matthew Colapinto and great-grandchild Landon Dains. In addition to her husband John, Sr., she was predeceased by her son John, Jr. and daughter, Joanne Shea. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear neighbors and friends.
Gladys’ family would like to thank her friends and extended family for their generous outpouring of love and support as she overcame recent illnesses. With spunk and determination, she fearlessly fought the battles and proved the statistics wrong. She showed us hope and tremendous strength. The family would also like to thank the staff of Aging Better at Home, LLC in Wolcott for the loving care and compassion they provided, enabling her to live at home to age 90. The family extends special gratitude and love to Nancy Picard who treated Gladys, and her relatives, as members of her own family.
Gladys was an avid Yankees fan and had fun discussing the players and scores with competitive Red Sox family and friends. She enjoyed using her iPad whether it was getting the latest news, playing games, or solving photo puzzles uploaded by family members. She also loved her game shows and with her wit and quick pace, she’d be the first to shout out the answers.
One of Gladys’ greatest joys was making hand-made, personalized crafts and giving them to people she met along the way. To honor her thoughtfulness, the family would like to ask anyone interested to “Pay-it-Forward” - to do a kind deed for someone you know, or even a complete stranger, in her memory.
