Wolcott – Mr. George E. Baylis, 97, passed away on Saturday, December 14, at the Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of the late Carmela A. (Fucito) Baylis.
George was born November 17, 1922 in Waterbury, son of the late Sidney and Anna (Moran) Baylis. Raised in Naugatuck, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Naugatuck High School, class of 1942. After his graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served honorably in the Pacific Theater with the 4th Marine Raider Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment of the 6th Marine Division. Upon his discharge he went to work for Uniroyal as a supervisor, retiring after a 35 year career. He had been a member of the American Legion Post 17 in Naugatuck and was very involved in Legion baseball as a coach, winning an American Legion State Championship in 1948 and was long time active parishioner of St. Pius X Church.
He is survived by three sons, Dr. William Baylis and his wife Patricia of Westmont, Il, Thomas Baylis of Wolcott and James Baylis of Wolcott; one sister, Nancy Nester of Naugatuck; two grandsons, Christopher and Daniel and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 16, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Woodtick Memorial Funeral Home 420 Woodtick Rd. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 A.M. at St. Pius X Church (St. Basil the Great Parish) 525 Woodtick Rd. in Wolcott. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck.
