Wolcott – Mr. Donald J. Gawitt, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, May 14, at Vitas Inpatient Hospice at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

Donald’s loving and devoted nature endeared him to all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elvira “Veta” Gawitt, his son Douglas Gawitt, daughter-in-law Kelly Gawitt and three cherished grandchildren, Ty, Joy and Lyla Gawitt. He also leaves his brother, William Gawitt and William’s wife Marilyn of Bristol, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

During his lifetime, Donald served honorably in the US Army during the Korean War, after his service, he worked at General Electric for thirty nine years before retiring. He also worked for the Town of Wolcott and was a proud member of the Wolcott Volunteer Fire Department, Company 2, for over fifteen years, serving as deputy chief from 1982 to 1986.

Donald’s gentle and kind nature was reflected in his hobbies, which included golf, fishing, reading, puzzles and spending time with family and friends. He was a man of few words but demonstrated his loyalty and commitment to those who knew him. His lifelong friend, Bob Babich, was a constant companion and source of support.

The family would like to thank the staff on O’Brien 4 and Vitas for their kindness towards Don.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Woodtick Memorial 420 Woodtick Rd. Wolcott. A prayer service will be held at 12 Noon. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Don’s name to the Wolcott Volunteer Fire Dept. Co. 2 at 58 North St. Wolcott, CT 06716 or to the Wolcott Volunteer Ambulance 48 Todd Rd. Wolcott, CT 06716
