Waterbury- Mr. Wilfred E. Cabana, 94, died on Wednesday, November 12, at Abbott Terrace Health Care in Waterbury. He was the husband of the late Joanne (Gonillo) Cabana.
Mr. Cabana was born December 29, 1919 in Waterbury, son of the late Ernest C. and Blanche (Hebert) Cabana. Wilfred served honorably in the United States Army during WWII. He served in the 834th Aviation Battalion, 9th Air Corps as a platoon leader of 32 men and was assigned to build airstrips for returning B-17 Flying Fortresses, P-51 Mustangs and British Spitfire planes. His duties took his service to Normandy, Northern Europe, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge. His awards and decorations include the Croix de Guerre, a Presidential Unit Citation, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal and received the Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor.
After the war, Mr. Cabana finished his GED and worked at American Fastener Company. He became highly skilled and took additional mechanics and drafting courses at Maloney School. He worked for the Connecticut State Police for ten years and then owned Waterville Lumber for ten years. He was an active member and past commander of the VFW Post 7330 in Oakville.
He is survived by his brother, Albert F. Cabana of Waterbury; his sister, Doris Tata of Prospect; his niece, Karen Chicoine; his nephew, Gary Baldowski; great nephew, Scott Chicoine and great niece, Kristine Chicoine. He was predeceased by his siblings, Bertha Amico, Rita Baldowski and Henry Cabana.
Arrangements: Calling hours will be held today from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Woodtick Memorial 420 Woodtick Rd. in Wolcott. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday at 10:00 A.M. at the Shrine of St. Anne. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
