Ronald Greenwood
Devoted husband and father
WATERBURY- Ronald Greenwood, 89, beloved husband of Jacqueline (Bartolini) Greenwood passed away peacefully on Friday September 22nd at the Village at East Farms with his family by his side.
Born in Waterbury on July 22, 1934, Ronald was the son of the late Andrew G. and Dorothy (Hackett) Greenwood. He graduated from Wilby High School. Ron then chose to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. He was stationed overseas and continued to talk of his Navy days. When he returned home, he worked for American Greetings Company for over 20 years. At the end of that career he opened his first Rent-A-Wreck business in Bridgeport. It was such a success he and his daughter Lisa opened a second location in Milford. After he sold those businesses, Jackie and Ron purchased Bozzuto's Candy Division on Freight Street in Waterbury and operated it as Candy Express along with their daughter Lisa and former son-in-law Nelson Matos until they retired in 1996. At that time, Ron, Jackie and Lisa spent much time together at their house on the Cape. While there, he drove his 1976 Rolls Royce in the parade they had every year.
Ron and Jackie spent many hours keeping their property well manicured. They insisted on doing the work themselves, it brought them much joy and pride. One of their favorite pastimes was feeding the birds. This too was a family event. Ron liked to roam a lot and not be found. On many of these occasions he was usually up on the roof of his house walking around or fixing his infamous antenna. Ron tinkered with things, everything! He would take things apart to see how they worked and then was unable to put them back together. His sidekick, former son-in-law Keith Czarsty would come to his rescue and help him.
Ron particularly liked to do 1000 piece puzzles with his daughter Lisa. They enjoyed this throughout the fall and winter months, it was definitely daddy daughter time. He was also an avid Red Sox fan in a family of NY Yankee fans. He stood by his team taking many ribbings for it especially from his brother-in-law Bob Vitale who predeceased him, but not before the Red Sox won two World Series. Watching television was also a passion of his. He would be found many times enjoying his westerns and game shows.
Ron liked to take rides, so much so that he and Jackie made it their mission to travel the entire United States of America. Poor Jackie had to endure his old radio mysteries throughout all these trips, also a world traveler, Ron, Jackie and many friends had traveled overseas many times. His Favorite place was Germany which they visited three times.
The Greenwoods always hosted great parties. Ron loved when Jackie and Lisa would have an idea for a theme party. There was great food and many times live entertainment. Ron especially loved when Lisas fiance Michael Cammarata would sing and play for them.
He will be deeply missed by the Wednesday Night Guys Club which he started and is still active. Ron was also known for his quirky sense of humour. He would often greet people by saying 'Oh! You again!' He was affectionately known as 'Pepper ass' by his friends because he couldn't sit still.
In addition to his wife Jackie of 63 years, left to cherish his memory his daughter Lisa Pellegrino, nieces Cookie and her husband Dr. John Keggi, Terri Salvatore, and nephew James Salvatore, and many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his sister Carol Salvatore and nephew Ken Salvatore.
Jackie and Lisa would also like to thank the staff of The Village at East Farms, VITAS Hospice and Visiting Angels. Also, a special thanks to his sister-in-law Barbara Vitale and her sons Michael and Mark Vitale.
In lieu of flowers please make donations in Rons memory to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital or The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 195 in Watertown.
