WOLCOTT ~ Robert J. Holmes, 92, passed away March 15, 2012 at Waterbury Hospital following a brief illness. His beloved wife of 68 years, Margaret (Currie) Holmes, predeceased him in November, 2010.
"Bob" was born in Waterbury on December 10, 1919 to the late John W. and Emma (Browne) Holmes. He grew up in the Mill Plain section of the East End and was a graduate of Crosby High School and New Haven College.
During World War II, he was assigned to the Army Air Corps, shipping out aboard the Queen Mary to England where he served as a Warrant Officer in the BAD2 Headquarters until the end of the war.
Upon his return to the States, Bob returned to work at Anaconda ~ American Brass headquarters in Waterbury as an accountant. He retired from Anaconda as a Systems Analyst after 41 years of service.
Bob and "Peg" were Wolcott residents for over 50 years, but loved Cape Cod, their "second" home, where they vacationed with their family for many years. They also travelled extensively to Hawaii, Aruba, the National Parks, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand. He and Peg took up golf and were former members of the Farmingbury Golf Club in Wolcott.
A diehard sports fan, Bob played basketball for Crosby High School, the Mill Plain League, the East Enders, and several industrial leagues. He was an avid Giants and Yankees fan. Bob loved music and was an accomplished pianist. He was a lifelong member of the Mill Plain Union Church where he served on numerous church boards and committees.
Above all, Bobs greatest joy were the times spent with his devoted family who adored him and his quiet nature, patience, loyalty, and quick wit. His survivors include his three children, Beth Smedick, and her partner, Dave Voris of Southington, Gail Pernaa, and her husband, Bill of Watertown, and Robert Holmes, and his wife Norma, of Wellfleet, MA, his grandchildren, Meghan Alexander, Sarah Smedick, Rufus Ayers, Kyle Smedick and Tyler Ayers, and his great grandchildren, Andrew Taylor, Sabrina Antonacci, Shauna Ayers, Billy and MacKenzie Alexander, Sadie Ayers, Seth and Nieve Smedick. He was predeceased by an infant brother.
