Obituary

Richard J. OBrien, 89, passed away surrounded by his loving family, Saturday, June 13, 2015 at St. Marys Hospital after a brief illness. He was the widower of Shirley (Berdan) OBrien to whom he was married for 57 years until her passing in 2006. He was born on May 29, 1926 in Waterbury, Connecticut to the late Michael and May (Palmer) OBrien. He grew up in Waterbury and attended Crosby and Leavenworth High Schools after graduating first in his class at Russell School in 1940. He was a resident of Wolcott for 54 years. He was a talented auto mechanic and co-owner of Fairview Garage in Bantam, Connecticut for thirty years. After his retirement he was the daycare provider for several of his grandchildren. He loved playing cards with his family, and was an excellent pool player. His mind stayed sharp as he loved doing the daily word jumble and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. He was a lifelong Yankees fan. He was kind and generous and often came to the aid of friends and family in need of car repairs. He is survived by his daughters Kathleen (John) Cordone of Wolcott, with whom he made his home, Patricia (Tom) Buchanan of Naugatuck, Laurie (Steven) Seymour of Meriden, and his son Richard (Bonnie) OBrien of Auburn, Massachusetts. He also leaves grandchildren, John Cordone, Kate Shelton, Meghan and Mackenzie Buchanan, Christopher and Brooke Foti, Kyle, Valerie, and Lauren OBrien, and Justin Provost. He also leaves great grandchildren Chloe and Casey Shelton, and Samantha Provost. He also leaves brother-in-law Calvert Green of Bristol, and sister-in-law Bella Berdan of Prospect, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Ed, Albert, and James OBrien and his sister, Lydia Labbe. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 16 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Road, Wolcott. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Woodtick Memorial. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Wolcott.
