WATERBURY ~ Rachel (Poirier) Hamel, 83 of Waterbury passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013 at St. Marys Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Andrew Hamel. Rachel was born May 6, 1930 in Manchester, NH, daughter of the late Denis and Louisia (Bouffard) Poirier. She was a communicant of the Shrine of St. Anne. Rachel enjoyed sewing, bingo and traveling to the casinos. Besides her husband, Andrew of 62 years, she will be missed by her children, Robert Hamel and his wife, Marsha of Howard, CO, Leo Hamel and his wife, Tamara of Prescott Valley, AZ, Diane Hamel and her partner, Heidi Eccelston of North Clarendon, VT, Cindy Schulte and her husband, Eddie of Stamford, and Roger Hamel of Watertown, her sister, Irene Ponte of Waterbury, 11 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Albert and sisters, Lucille, Claire, and Simonne and her brother-in-law, Americo "Mickey" Ponte. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9 am from Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Rd., Wolcott to the Shrine of St. Anne for a funeral mass at 10 am. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 5 to 8 pm at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the Telemetry and Vitas Hospice caregivers at St. Marys Hospital for their excellent care during Rachels stay.
