Obituary

Sandi M. Stephens of Wolcott. She had a quiet countenance and gentle spirit. She was grace under fire, a devoted wife and nurturing mother; a loving daughter, sister and friend; a high achiever and top-flight nurse; a woman of strength and courage with a legacy as rich and embracing as her love for others. Sandi Stephens is now at rest. Surrounded by family and friends, the devoted wife of Robert Stephens passed quietly in their home Sunday, September 18. She was 44. The lifetime Connecticut resident was the daughter of Liz Roczynski and the late James Boucher. Born January 26, 1967, from childhood to adulthood, Sandi led an active and generally joyous life, but according to Sandi, her life truly began on July 15, 2009, the day she committed her life to Christ. She was an active member of the Church of Christ at 3211 North Main Street, Waterbury. Not one to quote scripture, Sandi was an avid Bible reader who had a passion for sharing the hope that she had with others. Certain passages define her -- 'Love is patient, love is kind; it is not jealous, does not brag, is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in wickedness, but rejoices with the truth, hears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.' Much of Sandi's adult life was spent demonstrating her affection, love and care for others, especially family, friends and co-workers. Anticipating her death, she shared special thoughts with those close to her, including writing little notes to her children to remind them of the special moments or events she shared with each of them. She encouraged family and friends with humor and praise right to the end. In her last few months, she influenced several Bible studies and served as a living testament to how a Christian should live and view death. '... We do not want you to be uninformed brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the Word of the Lord, that we, who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.' 1 Thessalonians 4:13-15. A conscientious student, Sandi was a graduate of Kaynor Tech High School. She achieved Magna Cum Laude at Western Connecticut University earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Prior to her death, she was pursuing a Masters Degree in Nursing from Western Connecticut State University. In addition, Sandi spent 10 years as a licensed medical practitioner, having worked three years at Saint Mary's hospital where she served as an oncology nurse. She spent five years at in various nursing positions, including several stints as a nursing supervisor. Besides her mother and husband of 12 years, Sandi is survived by two sons from a previous marriage Alan Hickey, 21, of Wolcott, CT and Sean Hickey, 18, of Wolcott, CT; a stepson, Michael Stephens, 16, of Wolcott, CT, and a stepdaughter Erica Stephens, 19, who resides in New Jersey. Additional survivors include brothers, Steven Boucher, 45 and Scott Boucher, former Connecticut residents who both now reside in South Carolina. She is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. In the words of the Palmist, 'Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Godly ones.' Sandi is at rest until the day her Lord returns to claim his own. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at Woodtick Memorial funeral home, 420 Woodtick Road, Wolcott, CT.
