Torrington - Mr. John Tyler Rice, 30, formally of Wolcott, passed away unexpectedly at his home. John was born on January 15, 1984 in Farmington, son of Mrs. Gale Sarant, of Ohio, and the late John David Rice. Growing up in Wolcott, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Wolcott High School. John loved sports and was an avid Boston Bruins fan. He was a youth hockey defenseman and an elite baseball player. John also helped out in his community receiving the Community Spirit Award from the governor of the State of Connecticut. Besides his mother, John is survived by his daughter, Makayla Baldwin Rice of Ohio; two brothers, Ryan and Patrick Hamning of Columbus, OH; a sister, Heidi Rice of Waterbury; his step-father, Dr. Richard Hamning of Ohio, his maternal grandmother, Martha Cooper; four nieces and nephews, Ella Rice, Zoe Rice, Sean Rice, and Ryan Barker; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Arrangements: A memorial service will be held on Thursday evening, May 29, 2014 at 7:00 P.M. at Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Rd., Wolcott. Family and friends may call on Thursday evening from 5:00 P.M. until the time of service. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury.
