Wolcott - On Wednesday November 23, John Keane Sr. peacefully passed away in his home while being surrounded by his family, John was 94 years young. He was born in Port Jefferson, Long Island and moved to Waterbury at the age of 13.
John married Teresa Galligan and they raised their 7 children in the town of Wolcott. John is survived by his 5 children: Son John Keane and his wife Mary Jane Keane, of Waterbury; daughter Karen Floyd and her husband James Floyd, of Watertown; son Thomas Keane and his wife Jodi Keane of Avon, CT; daughter Sandra Poudrier and her husband Barry Poudrier of Reno, Nevada and son Timothy Keane and his wife Sheena Keane of Burlington, CT. John had two sons who unfortunately passed away early in life William Keane (Age 24) and Daniel Keane (Age 36). He is predeceased by brothers, Joseph Keane of Rutland, VT and Gerald Keane of Waterbury, CT and his Mother, Evelyn Moore of Waterbury, CT. John was also blessed with 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, John leaves behind many close loved ones who became extended family.
John joined the Merchant Marines as a fearless 16 year old; While enlisted he visited over 30 countries while serving as an Able Body Seaman. John was a strong advocate for the recognition of the Merchant Marines efforts and served during WWII and he recently was a recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal; the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions.
John worked as a teamster for almost 40 years at the following companies: Bond Bread, BrockHall Dairy and Knudsen Dairy. John was the co-owner of 21st Century Aluminum Products and was an active real-estate agent for Vitale reality for 30 years giving up his real-estate license at the age of 90.
John was a long standing active member of the Wolcott Congregational Church where he served in the choir. John had a passion for singing and was a member of the singing group the Top Hatters. In addition, John was an active member of the American Legion of Wolcott. John lived a long and full life. His family and friends will miss him dearly. The family would like to sincerely thank Bristol Hospice for making Johns new journey as easy as possible.
Calling hours are Monday, November 28, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Woodtick Memorial 420 Woodtick Rd. Wolcott. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at the Wolcott Congregational Church 185 Center St. Wolcott. Burial with full military honors will follow in the New Pine Grove Cemetery.
