Obituary

Wolcott - Clement V. Valerio Sr. passed into eternal rest at the age of 96 at Beacon Brook Rehab in Naugatuck on March 31st, 2020. He was the husband of the late Natalie (Materia) Valerio, for 68 years, whom he missed greatly. Mr. Valerio was born on July 14, 1923 in Waterbury, CT, and was the son of Giovanni and Lucia (Gloria) Valerio. Clement was proud to serve his country during WWII. Having enlisted in the Navy at age 19, he subsequently served aboard Liberty ships in the US Navy Armed Guard. Near the end of the war, he met his future wife, Natalie, in Boston. Later, while working nights as an electrician at Chase Brass and Copper, Clem Sr. attended and graduated from the Ward School of Electronics. After earning an associate degree at Mattatuck Community College, he was employed as a technician at Lewis Engineering in Waterbury. Clem acquired many additional skills over the years, including plumbing, heating, and carpentry, enabling him to serve as a self-contractor in the construction of his family home in Wolcott, in 1960. He also gave numerous haircuts within his immediate family over the years. Pastimes that Clem enjoyed were golf, dancing and gardening with his wife Natalie, and notably the hobby of Amateur (Ham) Radio communication (eventually earning an Extra Class License under his call sign, KB1TW). He instilled an early appreciation for the importance of education in his sons, and also encouraged them in the pursuit of music. He and Natalie were parishioners of Saint Maria Goretti Church, and were members of the Cercemaggiore Community Club in Oakville. Clem was also proud to be a 4th-degree Knight of Columbus. Clement Sr. leaves his 3 sons: Clement Jr. and his wife Alberta, of Cheshire; John and his wife Janice, of Durham; and Christopher, of Torrington; his brother Michael Valerio; and sister Carmella Tata, both of Waterbury; his four grandchildren: John Michael Valerio (Shin); Sarah Jane Morier; Andrea Fallin (Jonathan), and Albert Valerio; two great-grandchildren: George Fallin; and Margaux Morier, five nieces and nephews; and friends and neighbors. Including his beloved wife, Natalie, Clement was predeceased by his older sister, Antoinette Rocco, of Waterbury; and by his younger sister, Catherine Perillo, of Wolcott. Continuing until nearly the end of his time here, he phoned family and friends daily. The sheer amount of friends for whom he cared, as well as the massive collection of acquaintances he came to know during his life (and whom he was still able to recall from as long ago as his childhood), was inspiring. This consistent interest in friends and family sustained him through a sometimes challenging final decade of life. Toward the end of this period, members of the "We Care Companions and Caregivers" team--including Maxine, Charlotte, Jodie, Jade, and Yvonne--provided Clement with loving care during his last year-and-a-half of life, and enabled him to remain home and focus on spending time with his family. Services for Clement Sr. will be held at a later date.
