Obituary

Martin J. Sweeney, devoted husband to Helene Sweeney of 63 years, passed away peacefully Sunday May 31 at the age of 87 at Glenmeadow Retirement community in Longmeadow, MA.

Born on March 20,1939 in Waterbury, CT, Marty was the son of the late Martin and Margaret (Hurley) Sweeney. Marty was a proud patriot who served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was a hard worker who did what was necessary to provide for his family. He retired from Anaconda American Brass after 50+ years. While working at the factory known as American Brass he was also a bartender at various establishments, cut trees down out of state, painted houses and laid ceramic tile when funds were necessary.

He was a lifelong member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Waterbury Lodge #265. He enjoyed weekly breakfasts at Bill and Sams with his friends and frequent dinners with Helene at East Street Eatery.

Marty also enjoyed traveling with Helene, especially to their timeshare at Watersedge in Westbrook, CT.

Marty and Helene lived in Wolcott for over 57 years. A proud husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Marty was fiercely loyal and devoted to his friends and family. He worked hard and played harder. He was extremely witty but resolute in his convictions. He would be the first one to buy you a drink if you were lucky enough to sit next to him at a bar. He was wise and immensely proud of his Irish heritage.

In addition to his wife Helene, Marty will be deeply missed by his daughter Lisa and her husband Dr. Glenn Genest of East Longmeadow MA, his daughter Colleen and her husband Richard Dabkowski of Tennessee. His four grandchildren, Megan Muldoon and her husband Patrick Muldoon, Erik Genest and his wife Liza Hurley-Genest, Sean Barile and Zachary Barile, his great grandson Finley Muldoon, his cousin Maureen Karpicki, and his 2 nephews Jim and Jason Schwarz. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Brown.

As a family, we would like to thank all the dear friends that stepped in to help during dad’s fight, as well as the staff at Glenmeadow, the VA and Prime Health aides of MA.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Marty’s life on Monday June 22nd at Woodtick Memorial at 420 Woodtick Rd Wolcott, CT. Calling hours will begin at 1 PM followed by a funeral Service on site at 3PM. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
