IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lucille
Belomy
June 24, 1934 – March 6, 2025
Lucille Belomy passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, at the age of 90. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, seven grandkids and their spouses, seven great-grandkids, five siblings (one deceased) and their spouses, 12 nieces and nephews and their families, and two husbands (both deceased) and their families.
Lucille was born in 1934 Lucille Janis Barbieri in Waterbury, Connecticut, the oldest of six children. She was the first in her family to graduate college with a bachelor's degree, but she went on to earn two Master's and one PhD degree. She married Paul Belomyzy, Jr. in 1956—changing their name to Belomy in 1963 shortly after moving to California. She was originally an English teacher at Del Mar High School in San Jose California, and then became a school administrator as Dean and VP. At age 40, she started a dual career as a Family & Marriage Counselor. She retired from teaching at 60 but kept counseling full-time until she retired at 80.
Lucille traveled to over 70 countries, mostly after she was single at 55. She saw the Great Wall of China, temples in Japan, the Taj Mahal in India, old cars in Havana Cuba, Northern Lights in Scandinavia, church onion domes in St. Petersburg Russia, whales in Alaska, the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, the Spice Market in Istanbul, the treasures of ancient Greece and Italy, the Eiffel Tower, the castles of the British isles, every major museum in Europe, Flamenco in Argentina, tigers in Africa, and so much more.
Literature was important to Lucille, both her own writings and those of others. She was a member of three book clubs at any point in time, one three-generational with children and grandchildren, and one meeting monthly for over 55 years. The arts were a passion of Lucille's, having season tickets to the Opera, Ballet, Symphony, and Theater; her favorite guests being one of her granddaughters or her oldest great-granddaughter. Lucille was an amazing cook but loved to dine out; always impeccably dressed, often in a new outfit—her self-described single-vice being shopping for clothes! After her second husband, James Ousley, passed, Lucille moved to the active-retirement community of Rossmoor in Walnut Creek California—living there her final seven years—still drinking martinis, joining 13 clubs, always curious, always engaging, always smiling.
Lucille was kind, generous, compassionate, joyful, curious, intellectual, spunky, fun, and quietly fierce in her beliefs in the good in people, her church, and her friends and family. Simply put, she had an amazing soul. Whether a 50-year relationship or a conversation with a new acquaintance at a party, she connected deeply and made a lasting impression. She touched many people and will be missed by all. Lucille lived a full rich life, and as much as we all miss her, we cherish the love, joy and spirit she brought to and left for all of us.
May she rest in peace.
Inurnment of Lucille's cremains will be in the Garden of Angels Columbarium located on the "new side" of Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury, CT .
