Obituary

WOLCOTT ~ Joseph E. Murphy, Jr., 78, of Wolcott passed away on April 14, 2013 at St. Marys Hospital. He was the husband of Marcia (Cadrain) Murphy. Joe was born July 23, 1934 in New Britain, son of the late Joseph and Anna (Riley) Murphy, Sr. He attended local schools in New Britain and was a three sport athlete (baseball, basketball and football) and received a scholarship to Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He played basketball and played semi pro baseball with local teams. After college, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Following his discharge, became a supernumery policeman in New Britain and graduated from Porters School of Design. His work career included employment at Tuttle & Bailey for 25 years and retirement from Emhart and part-time employment at E.F.I. Being a well versed athlete brought him induction into the New Britain Hall of Fame in 2007. Joe was known for his Irish wit and genuine interest in people. Besides his wife, Marcia, with whom he would have celebrated 53 years of marriage in June, he leaves his children, Joseph Murphy III and his wife, Catherine of Wolcott, Jennifer Pelletier and her husband, Keith of Wolcott, Mary Barton and her husband, Andrew of Bristol, and Patrick Murphy and his wife, Jennifer of Wolcott, brothers, Francis Murphy and his wife, Peg of New Britain, and Anthony Murphy and his wife, Chris of Berlin, his grandchildren, Melissa and Joseph Murphy, Ryan, Tyler and Jordan Pelletier, Taylor and Angela Barton, and Nathan and Connor Murphy, and several nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, April, 19, 2013 at 10 am at St. Maria Goretti Church, 1300 Woodtick Rd., Wolcott, followed by burial in Edgewood Cemetery. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5 to 8 pm at Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Rd., Wolcott.
