Obituary

JOHN T. BENDER WOLCOTT ~ John Thomas Bender, 83, of Wolcott passed away on Saturday, January 31 in the arms of his daughter, Karen at Wolcott View Manor. He is finally reunited with his beloved wife, Anna (Sinzger) Bender of 55 years whose constant care provided a loving atmosphere for the both of them. He will also join his son, John and canine companion, Bronson. Mr. Bender was born December 13, 1925 in Waterbury, son of the late Alexander and Margaret (Jakubzyck) Bender. He is a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Air Force and received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Victory Medal. John was a graduate of Leavenworth High School and in his youth, he played baseball with the Eastman Dodgers. He was very proud of constructing his Wolcott home with his brothers William and Al and brother-in-law, Stanley Zawilinsky. He was a huge Yankees fan and a favorite pastime was working on cars. He received a black belt in Karate and enjoyed weight lifting in his younger years. He had been employed at Farrel Foundry in Cheshire for many years. Besides his loving daughter Karen Cain who loved and cared for him dearly and who lovingly called him Spud, Dude, stubborn Pollock and of course, Dad and her husband Guy of Canton, he leaves his two grandchildren, Gabrielle and Logan Cain, his nieces and nephews, Joseph Skorvanek, Peggy Hayes, Beverly Kevorkian, Shirley Rzewuski, Cheryl Skorvanek, Gail Fesh, Thomas Bender, Kathy Richardson, Barbara Beckman, Carol Embacher, Michael and Marty Brown and his sisters-in-law, Carol Brown and Margaret Bender. Bronson was his constant companion and visited John at Gaylord and Wolcott View Manor. He was predeceased by his son, John, his brothers, Al and William Bender, his sisters, Mary Zawilinsky and Estelle Skorvanek and his niece, Nancy Wheeler, and nephew, John E. Bender. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to St. Marys Hospital, Sacred Heart 5 staff, the Veterans Medical Hospital in Newington and Wolcott View Manor who treated John as part of their family, including his roommate, Louis Ridenhour. "Till We Meet Again" Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:30 am from the Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Rd., Wolcott to St. Pius X Church for a funeral mass at 10. Burial will follow in New Pine Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 8:30 am until the time of the service.
