John E. Akers, 80, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015, with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of the late Mary (Collier) Akers. John was born on August 18, 1935, in War, W. Virginia, son of the late Posi and Reba (Moore) Akers. He was a hard worker, and was devoted to his family and friends. He loved being outdoors, animals, and traveling down South. He also proudly served his country as a Paratrooper in the U.S. Army. John is survived by his sons, Johnny Akers, and his wife, Denise; Kenneth Akers; and Thomas Akers; his daughter, Sharon Grisgraber; 3 brothers; 4 sisters; 5 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and extended family. Besides his wife, John was predeceased by 4 brothers and sisters. Calling hours will be held Monday, December 28, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m, at Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Road, Wolcott. A funeral home service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. with friends and family arriving at 9:30 a.m. Entombment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Watertown will full military honors.
