Floyd James Bird, 86, of Wolcott, passed away Friday morning, March 18, 2016, at Wolcott View Manor after a long illness. Floyd was born May 3, 1929, in Waterbury to Carlton (Bill) Bird and Bessie (Myngheer) Bird.
Spending his childhood in Waterville, CT and later in Prospect, CT, he graduated early from Crosby High School in 1946 and joined the Army to serve his country. He served in the Army of Occupation in post-war Japan from 1946 to 1948. Upon returning home, he married his high school sweetheart, the late Muriel Arlette Carrington, of Prospect. Mr. Bird graduated from Bryant College with a degree in Accounting in 1951 and went to work for Bar-Work MFG. Co. in Waterbury, where he spent his entire career.
Floyd and Arlette began raising their four children in Bucks Hill and then bought their first and only home in Wolcott in 1961. They were married for fifty-seven years, until her passing in 2006.
Dad was known for his intellect, his work ethic, his commitment to family, his knowledge of sports, his love of the Boston Red Sox, and his joy of vacation time with his family at Cape Cod. Mom and Dad also hosted several trips for family at Walt Disney World.
Floyd leaves his four children; Sandy Knapik, and her husband, Jack, of Granby, CT; Cindy Sharkey, and her husband, Bob, of Wolcott; Arly Schwab, and her husband, Jeff, of Chatham, MA; and Bruce Bird, and his wife, Barbara, of Wolcott. He also leaves eight grandchildren; Toby, Dustin and Jared Knapik; Evan Sharkey; Chris and Meghan Davis; Jeff Bird, and his wife, Sarah; and Meredith Rivers, and her husband, Mike; and four great-grandchildren; Lucy and Rachel Bird; Muriel Gotz; and Joseph Rivers. Survivors also include all of his siblings; Carl Bird, of Ocala, FL; Carlene Cobb, and her husband Ernest, of Eastham, MA; and Dianne Santos and her husband, Nelson, of Middlebury; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Wolcott View Manor for their excellent care of Dad, and also his closest neighbors, the Olmsteds and the Conroys for their care and kindness.
Family is welcome to attend a graveside service with full military honors on Saturday, April 30, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at Edgewood Cemetery, in Wolcott.
