The smell of the earth in springtime brought her joy transcendent. WOLCOTT Ann C. Hodges, 93, of Wolcott, passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2023, surrounded by her beloved books and gardens. She was the loving wife of the late Byron W. Hodges who died 25 years ago. Ann was born in Waterbury on May 9, 1930, daughter of the late Peary and Zella (Oettinger) Cohen, and she grew up on Euclid Avenue. Ann was appreciative, optimistic, a lover of art, music, and poetry, and a lifelong learner. Always passionate about reading, she went back to college after raising three children. Earning a masters degree in library science at the age of 48, she then embarked on a long career as a librarian, working at the law firm Carmody & Torrance until the age of 85. Ann loved the natural world, and digging her hands in the dirt of her garden was her religion. She created beauty all around her, both with her artwork and with her plants and flowers. But above all else, she loved her family. Even in difficult times, she counted herself the luckiest person in the world because she had such a wonderful family. Ann is survived by her children, Mark, Michael and his wife Karen, and Ruth and her husband John; four grandchildren, Evan and his fiance Megan, Adam and his wife Esther, Taylor and her husband Jon, and Laurel and her husband Andrew; and two great-grandchildren, Archie and Magnolia. Anns brother Raymond Cohen and his wife Andrea predeceased her. Please join the family for an open house in celebration of Ann at her home in Wolcott, built for them by Byron over 70 years ago, at 47 Brooks Hill Road on Saturday, June 3 between noon and 4:00.
