Wolcott – Mary (Bento) Mendyka, 89, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and nurse, passed away on October 13, 2017 after a short illness. She was the widow of Mr. Frederick Mendyka Sr.

Mary was born on August 8, 1928 in Waterbury, daughter of the late Frank and Grace (Simone) Bento. Mary worked as a registered nurse at Waterbury Hospital for a number of years before her retirement. She loved reading, bingo, puzzles, trips to the casino, and was an avid UConn Huskies women’s basketball fan. Mary was very active in the Charles Rietdyke Senior Center in Wolcott and served as an officer in the Wolcott Senior Association.

Mary is survived by her three children, Frederick Mendyka Jr. and his wife Eileen of Anderson, S.C., Kathy Fortier and her husband Rick of Southington; and Alison Nawaraskas of Wolcott,; her sister Laura Belanger of Waterbury; her brother Antonio Bento of Wolcott; six grandchildren, Emily, Victoria, Joseph, Danielle, Shawn, and Megan; and her great-grandson Carter. She was predeceased by her brother Frank Bento; and her son-in-law, Joseph S. Nawaraskas.

Family and friends may call on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Woodtick Memorial, 420 Woodtick Rd., Wolcott. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s name to the Charles Rietdyke Senior Center, 211 Nichols Rd, Wolcott, CT 06716.
